"We tried to open up a space where we could only discuss climate change news. That didn’t really exist in Latin America countries before"

Ojo al Clima is an online and monthly print publication which aims to make the topic of climate change easier to understand. It was born from one of the main media outlets in the country, Seminario Universidad of the Universidad de Costa Rica in 2016, and since then it grew fairly big. It tried to take advantage from the fact that a large number of people were gaining interest in climate news thanks to Greta Thunberg and climate strikes.

The scientific content is mostly taken from the Fifth Report of the Intergovernmental
Panel on Climate Change, the intergovernmental scientific body of the United Nations investigating on all the issues concerning climate change. But they also include local and regional investigations.

Sebastián is a 24-year-old environmental freelance journalist and former editor of Ojo al Clima. He writes about sustainability, biodiversity and climate change. Sebastián is based in San José, the capital of Costa Rica, but often moves around the country to report for national and international publications, such as Science Magazine, Reuters and The Guardian, just to name a few. He feels privileged to be a journalist in Costa Rica, where the freedom of press is protected and journalists are valued.
Sebastián is one of the founders of the news platform Ojo al Clima fighting to expand the notion of Environmental Journalism, which was originally based on conservation and deforestation, but never really focused on climate change. He is now writing about every aspect of
climate change, staring from its immediate
effect on the environment to politics,
economy and law.
Mission
Ojo al Clima wants to provide to the Costa Rican and Latin American public the best scientific information and news about the change our Earth is suffering of, its causes and its solutions.
Its mission is to broaden the concept of environmental journalism, which was not only reporting on deforestation and national parks but also every other part of the system, including Environmental Economics, Politics and International Law.
The platform offers a new space where climate change news are easy explained to all the sectors of the population. It is also a platform to express new regional voices.
